Sledge hockey is played exactly the same as 'regular' hockey, with all the
same rules and equipment and one exception: the players do not skate, they play
while sitting in a sledge.
The sledges are designed like a sled with two skate blades on the bottom and
a glider at the front. The player sits in a seat at the back of the sled with
legs extended and strapped into the front. Each player has two short 'hockey'
sticks: they use a pick at one end of the stick to dig into the ice and propel
themselves, and a blade on the other end to handle and shoot the puck
Although the sport of sledge hockey was originally designed for people with a
physical disability, it is now played as an inclusive sport with both
able-bodied and disabled people playing together.
The SBHASA sponsors the
Calgary Scorpions Sledge Hockey and Ice Picking Club.
The team plays bi-weekly from 6:15-8:15pm at the Stew Hendry Arena (814 - 13th
Avenue NE).
